Here at Sistahs on the Shelf, we've begun an advice column,
where sistahs in the life could ask any kind of questions from books
to relationship issues. This month we have a letter from a woman
just getting into the life and wants to know how to meet other
women like herself. Read on for our advice.

I'm a older womyn, who has just experienced a
same-sex relationship for the first time with a
friend turned into lover. I always felt like there was
something missing from my past relationships with
men, but until I had this experience I did not
know what it was... Here is my dilema: I have

Dear Look,

One option is the tried-and-true Internet, where you could hook up with other
women like yourself and be as discreet as you like. One such site is mate1.com, a
free dating site that has profiles of women like you. Unlike other dating portals,
women can post and respond to ads for free. That's a relief to your wallet. Or you
could try to find an online lesbian group, such as Yahoo's Club Black Lezbian, where
you can meet women of all types who can provide a support system.

Now since you didn't provide what city you live in, I will assume you live in a
moderately-size town, hopefully one that has maybe a gay club or at least a gay
night at a straight club. If that's your thing, try hitting them one night. Or if not,
check to see if there's a gay/lesbian organization in the area, one aimed at
fellowship and group activties where you can meet more people.

Other than that, just keep your eyes and ears open. You'd be surprised how finely
tuned your gaydar can be when you turn it on.
